At the end of the 1940's the one-time blackmarketeer Gustav "Bubi" Scholz begins his meteoric rise to fame as European boxing champion and popular idol. Then, as fame gradually begins to fade, the descent into alcoholism and pill-popping begins. Scholz hits rock bottom in 1984 when he shoots his wife Helga during an argument. Roland Suso Richter, who was crowned with critical laurels for "Sven's Geheimnis" and "14 Tage Lebenslänglich", made the Scholz story in the tradition of the great boxing films. The biography of a contemporary  figure of pop-cultural history is a tricky choice for an adaption, but the risk, in this case, has paid off. Uwe Timm wrote the script and digital technology enabled a smooth editing-in of archive material. The film profits especially, though, from its top notch ensemble. "Die Bubi Scholz Story" also marks the start of this year's Cologne Conference retrospective dedicated to Götz George.
