"Party Monster", as the title hints, is about the rise and fall of a "scene angel". Fleeing the doldrums of the Midwest, Michael Alig arrived in New York and made a name for himself as a party promoter and ringleader of the Club Kids, a group of unbridled hedonists and eccentrics. His status as the preeminent nightlife guru of post-Warhol Manhattan promoted him to the role of media phenomenon with talk show allure. Alig's downfall came with hard drugs, the loss of control culminating in the murder of his lover, the "star" dealer Angel Melendez. Channel 4 co-financed this lurid underground production, which combines interviews with Alig in prison and Club Kid veterans with images, occasionally hard-core, of morbid theme parties and illegal "outlaw events" in fast food shops and subway trains.
