In 1897 three Sweds began a risky adventure when they took off on a North Pole expedition in a hot air balloon. The team of two engineers, a physicist and a photographer never returned. What became of them remained a mystery until 1930, when a Norwegian scientist found their documents, letters, journals and exposed film frozen in the polar ice. This find enabled the day by day reconstruction of the entire daredevil journey. Jan Troell, whose feature "Flight of the Eagle" was inspired by this discovery, has now made an exciting documentary interweaving the found film footage with scenes of the uncovering of the remains and fragments from his earlier film. Troell creates a magical mood with his very personal way of interpreting this dramatic historical event.
