Hong Kong 1997. The journalist John (Jeremy Irons) and the nightclub owner Vivian (Gong Li) are hopelessly in love. Vivian wants to be married by a rich Chinese businessman, John is terminally ill. He is in Hong Konk to make a video documentation of the last days before the handover to China. That's how he meets young Jean (Maggie Chung, "Fallen Angels"), who's been living on the street since being ousted by her family for falling in love with a Briton. Wang stages his wistful leave-taking of Hong Kong as a symbolic character study. Daily life in the Asian metropolis recorded by hand-held camera provides this moving story of passion, love and death with many individual faces.
