Clément (Jean Rochefort) is old and lonely and trapped in his own hallucinatory fantasy world. His new young neighbor is Luc, an easy-going, modern type and expectant father. Luc is unsuspecting as he begins to make friendly contact with the old man, but one night after dinner Luc finds he's been taken hostage in Clément's apartment. The two men become caught in a bitter duell; while Clément battles against lonliness, Luc literally fights to survive. Their attempts at mutual understanding each serve the sole purpose of mutual destruction. The fast-paced psychothriller reminiscent of Stephan King's "Misery" builds its dramatic tension on the claustrophobic situation in which the two characters battle it out with cruelty and dirty tricks. Provocative images, a remarkable soundtrack and most of all a brilliant Jean Rochefort as Clément keep the tension running high throughout.
