Whatever theory one has had with regard to the mysterious "John 3:16" signs to be spotted at televised sporting events in the last twenty years, it somewhat pales in comparison to the bizarre truth. The man behind the signs was Rollen Stewart, a.k.a. the Rainbow Man (for his trademark rainbow colored afro wig), a.k.a. John 3:16 (after he became a born-again Christian). He gave up a home and a marriage and spent the years living out of his car, buying a TV guide each week and driving around the country in a never-ending quest to get on television. Today, at age 51, Stewart is serving three life sentences in California. In 1992 he took a hotel maid hostage in L.A. and demanded a TV press conference. He said the world was going to end in six days and he needed to urge America repent. It took director Sam Green three years and some $14000 to complete his first feature documentary, using interviews, home movies, news footage and passages from Stewart's autobiography. The rise and the fall of the Rainbow Man - a sad and sordid story of alienation and profound meaninglessness in a mediaobsessed society.
