Phil Agland, Fachmann für fremde Welten („Baka: People of the Rainforest“, „China: Beyond the Clouds“), gewährt außergewöhnlichen Einblick in die künftige Weltmetropole Shanghai. Drei Jahre dauerten die Dreharbeiten zu dieser 7stündigen Channel 4-Produktion. Man trifft auf Normalbürger, Meinungsmacher, Eliteeinheiten und Drogenkartells, die v.a. um eins bemüht sind: sich nach Jahrzehnten der Isolation auf die neue Boomtown-Realität einzustellen. Ein seltener Glücksfall: Mit fiktionalen Elementen wie Handlung und Charakterentwicklung überwindet Agland rein anthropologische Beobachtung und damit auch Kulturgrenzen.
